Our Battle for Rent Control

WE WON!!!

By now, you should know that Newark, NJ Tenants were victorious in our battle for Rent Control.  No longer will you receive a 4% annual increase UNLESS the CPI-U is more than 4%.  Congratulations and pat yourselves on the back for paying attention, asking questions, writing letters, sending text messages, attending hearings and meetings, speaking at City Council meetings, speaking up and out with your neighbors, other neighbors, and anyone else who would listen.

Here at the Colonnade Apartments, our rent increases will be the value of the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) for the month in which your lease is renewed.

THANK YOU MATT SHAPIRO & MITCH KAHN OF NJTO FOR YOUR TIRELESS EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF NEWARK, NJ TENANTS!

How should we celebrate this victory?

Take a few of the dollars we have helped you save (just $20/$12 of those dollars), and join the Colonnade Residents Coalition and help advocate for all of those things we need corrected as rent paying tenants at the Colonnade Apartments.

Thanks Neighbors.

The ongoing battle for Rent Control is between Tenants and Landlords, and Newark Municipal  Council will decide who wins.  As such, the Newark Municipal  Council must be convinced to act in the interests of the Tenants – their constituents – the people who voted them into office.

How will they decide?
When will they decide?
What MUST you, as a tenant, do to help yourself and fellow tenants win?
How will their decisions affect you?

Effective June 20, 2014, the Rent Control Ordinance passed by Newark Municipal Council bases rent increases on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers (CPI-U), not 4%.
What is the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U)?
What should you do if your rent increase is 4%?

  1. First, I would like to refer to the owners as “property owners” instead of “Lords.” We can go from there

    Good Evening!

Earlier in the week, a young lady who lived with someone, returned home to find the apartment door locked and an eviction notice posted on the door. Apparently, she lived with someone and the apartment lease holder had been missing for over a month and subsequently, the rent hadn’t been paid. From my understanding, there was at least one previous notice issued.

The young lady contacted a couple of tenants here in the Colonnade, one of them accompanied her to the Colonnade Management Office, but due to legal restrictions, the young lady was not allowed in the apartment to claim her belongings. At this point I don’t know what happened after that.

The point is that if you, or anyone you know, are living with someone here at the Colonnade Apts. it is strongly recommended that you have your name(s) included on the apartment holder’s lease. This will avoid any potential future complications. It is winter, it’s cold and no one needs any aggravation whatsoever because of failure to follow legal guidelines.

    Thank you!
