More on Rent Control

2014-12-01: CPI-U percentage for 2015 (to date)

Jan. 1 rent increases – max 1.3%

2014-11-11: Latest CPI-U percentages

Dec. 1 rent increases – max 1%
Nov . 1 rent increases – max 1.3%

2014-08-24:  Neighbors, 4% or 1.9%?  It’s as simple as that.  Rent increases in lease renewals are now under the Rent Control Ordinance. As of May 20, 2014, Landlords in Newark cannot raise your rent 4%. They can ONLY raise it to the value of  Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Per the NJTO, know that the CPI, and thus the maximum rent increase you can be given over the past few months is:

Oct. 1 rent increases – max 1.6%
Sept. 1 rent increases – max 1.7%

Aug 1 rent increases – max 1.9%
Jul 1 rent increases – max 1.6%
Rent increases between June 20 and June 30 – max 1.3%

Now, is that worth fighting for or would you rather blindly pay an illegal rent increase of 4%?

Neighbors, your activism and will to act in your own is in extremely high demand right now. Over the next few weeks our voice will be put to the test. Renters in the City of Newark are being called upon to GET INVOLVED and stand up for the Rent Control Ordinance.

We need all tenants to get involved in this battle… that is, unless you just unnecessarily want to pay an inaccurate, higher rent increase.  Be aware that tenants all over the city are organizing and getting involved in this battle.

What can you do?

Look for more information here on what we need you to do. Plan to help spread the word, and get engaged, as a rent paying tenant, in the fight to protect the Rent Control Ordinance. ALL demographics here – every person who pays rent should prepare to contact Newark’s Municipal Council and the Mayor to support and enforce the RCO that they passed. We will distribute a script for you to copy and contact numbers and email ids for all of City Council and Mayor Baraka.

What’s more, plan to BECOME A MEMBER OF THE COLONNADE RESIDENTS COALITION and the NJTO. Then you’ll learn what to do if you’ve already renewed your lease at that 4% increase.

Stay tuned and plan to help.
